SQL Server Certification: Progress Report

One of the requirements of the Microsoft Certified Trainer program is than an MCT must be certified on the product he/she trains on. As Ameriteach offers classes in SQL Server 2008, I needed to update my certifications to the new version. Here's a status update as I move through the exams.

I teach classes in all three "tracks" in the SQL Server space, so I need to certify as a Microsoft Certified IT Professional in each:

  • MCITP: Database Administrator 2008
  • MCITP: Database Developer 2008
  • MCITP: Business Intelligence Developer 2008

As an MCITPro in SQL Server 2005, where there was a combined track for DBA/DBDev and another for Business Intelligence Developer, I could have taken a set of upgrade exams:

  • Exam 70-453: Upgrade: Transition Your MCITP SQL Server 2005 DBA to MCITP SQL Server 2008 DBA
  • Exam 70-454: Upgrade: Transition Your MCITP SQL Server 2005 Database Developer to MCITP SQL Server 2008 Database Developer
  • Exam 70-455: Upgrade: Transition Your MCITP SQL Server 2005 Business Intelligence Developer to MCITP SQL Server 2008 Business Intelligence DeveloperBut because I'm either a glutton for punishment or just curious about how the exams have evolved over the years (I took my first Microsoft Certification exam in 1993), I decided to take the Technical Specialist exams, and then the IT Pro tests.

I've now taken and passed the following Technical Specialist exams:

At the end of that cycle of test, I was now a Microsoft Certified Technical Specialist in the DBA, DBDev and BI Dev categories. Then it was on to the "Pro"-level exams. I've taken and passed two so far:

    • Exam 70-450: PRO: Designing, Optimizing and Maintaining a Database Server Infrastructure using Microsoft SQL Server 2008
    • Exam 70-451: PRO: Designing Database Solutions and Data Access Using Microsoft SQL Server 2008

That makes me an MCITPro as a DBD, DBDev. The last one remaining, which I'll be scheduling soon, is:

    • Exam 70-452: PRO: Designing a Business Intelligence Infrastructure Using Microsoft SQL Server 2008

Then I'll be done with SQL Server 2008 certifications, and not only meet my requirements as an MCT, but maybe carve out some time to look at some other certifications.

Hmmm. Maybe I am a glutton for punishment...
